In Islamabad, Meta, the social media platform, has unveiled its proactive approach for the forthcoming general elections in Pakistan.
Alice Budi Satreju, Head of Miss Information Policy for Meta Asia Pacific, outlined these strategies, which encompass the establishment of an election operations team, the implementation of robust content policies to combat harmful content, efforts to counter misinformation, enhanced transparency in political advertising, digital literacy initiatives, and educational programs for citizens.
Satreju emphasized that Meta has spent recent years formulating a comprehensive strategy to ensure the integrity of elections on their platforms. They are committed to substantial investments aimed at providing people with trustworthy voting information while tackling issues such as misinformation, hate speech, and voter manipulation.
Furthermore, Alice Budi Satreju mentioned that Meta is drawing upon international experiences and insights from experts to safeguard electoral processes worldwide, including in Pakistan. For the upcoming general elections in Pakistan, Meta has assembled a team of subject matter experts well-versed in the country’s laws and unique circumstances. They will monitor and respond to emerging threats, alongside Pakistani nationals proficient in local languages.
In her closing remarks, Alice Budi Satreju stated, “We are taking multiple measures to combat misconduct and undesirable content on various fronts. This includes limiting the dissemination of misinformation, bolstering fact-checking capabilities, and enhancing transparency concerning advertisements displayed on Facebook.”
