The Election Commission of Pakistan has expressed regret for delaying the elections based on a resolution presented in the Senate.
In a letter to the Senate Secretariat, the Commission explained that it reviewed the Senate resolution during a meeting and concluded that it would not be suitable to postpone the general elections at this point. The letter mentioned that, after consultation with the President, the Election Commission set the polling date for February 8, 2024, and has provided instructions to the caretaker federal and provincial governments. The Commission assured the Supreme Court of its commitment to conducting the elections on February 8, stating that all necessary preparations have been completed.
However, Senator Dilawar Khan, in a letter to the Senate Chairman, expressed concern that despite the Senate passing the resolution on January 5 to postpone the elections, no steps have been taken in that direction. He emphasized the need to address the issues raised in the resolution before proceeding with the elections on February 8, stressing the importance of ensuring fairness and transparency in the electoral process.
