
The US State Department declined to comment on the Pakistan government’s letter regarding the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui.
US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel was asked in a media briefing about the Pakistan government’s letter about the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, to which he replied that he would not discuss private diplomatic communications. For information regarding Dr. Aafia’s case and imprisonment, the US Department of Justice should be consulted.
The Deputy Spokesperson of the US State Department further said that blasphemy laws are equally opposed everywhere in the world, including Pakistan. Such laws threaten the exercise of human rights, fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression, religion or belief.
